Cost every battery pack on the cells inside it and the warranty it carries

A battery maker's cost is mostly cells or lead, bought in markets that move daily. Its liability is a warranty that runs for years. We cost each pack on the cells inside it and track the price and currency exposure behind it. We provision warranty and producer-responsibility obligations from evidence.

In one paragraph

In a battery business one input dominates cost, and the warranty outlives the sale by years. The firms are lithium-ion pack assemblers, cell manufacturers and lead-acid battery makers, usually with ₹25–1,000 crore turnover. They supply electric-vehicle makers, energy-storage integrators, telecom and the replacement market. Warranty risk is long and technical. Extended producer responsibility applies to every battery placed on the market. The founder, chief executive or chief financial officer usually leads the work.

The economics

How the money moves in this trade

For a lithium-ion pack, imported cells are usually the largest cost, priced in foreign currency and moving with global supply and chemistry. Cells are graded on arrival, and rejected or mismatched cells add cost. For lead-acid makers, lead and its alloys dominate, and recovering lead from scrap batteries is part of the economics. Either way, customer prices are agreed for a period and the input does not wait.

Batteries carry warranties measured in years or cycles. Capacity degradation and failures only become visible long after sale. Under the battery waste management rules, producers must meet collection and recycling or refurbishment targets for the batteries they place on the market. Traction batteries must also pass safety tests under automotive standards before they reach vehicles. Each of these is a real cost that tends to be recognised late.

The problem

Where the numbers usually break down

Cell cost is averaged across products

Packs using different chemistries, grades or suppliers are costed on one average cell price, hiding which products are losing money.

Currency exposure sits on open orders

Cell purchase orders in foreign currency are committed before customer prices are fixed, with no record of the open position.

Warranty is provided by rule of thumb

Provisions use a flat percentage of sales rather than field failure and degradation data by product and customer.

EPR obligations are not accrued

Collection and recycling obligations for batteries placed on the market are paid when certificates are bought, not accrued as sales are made.

Rejected cells and returns are untracked

Cells failing incoming tests and packs returned for repair accumulate in stock without a value or a claim against the supplier.

What we do

The work, and the result each part produces

Pack costing by cell type and supplier

Each pack costed from its actual cells, BMS, enclosure, assembly time and testing, with cell price and grade tracked by supplier.

Product margins reflect the cells actually used.

Cell price and currency position

Open cell purchase orders, inventory and fixed-price customer orders reconciled, with the foreign-currency exposure reported weekly.

You know how exposed the order book is to the next move.

Warranty provision from field data

Failures, replacements and capacity claims recorded by product, batch and customer, and the provision built and revisited from that record.

Warranty liability is stated on evidence.

EPR obligation accounting

Batteries placed on the market recorded by type and weight, with the collection and recycling obligation accrued as sales occur.

Producer-responsibility cost is in the period that caused it.

Incoming rejection and supplier claims

Cells rejected at incoming inspection recorded with the test result and claimed back from the supplier.

Supplier quality cost is recovered rather than absorbed.

Repair and return accounting

Returned packs tracked through diagnosis, repair, replacement or scrap, with the cost charged to warranty or the customer.

Returns are a managed cost, not a stockpile.

Where we start

The first steps of an engagement

  1. Cell invoices, test data, claims

We ask for cell purchase invoices by supplier and grade, incoming test results, pack bills of material, warranty claim and return records, and EPR registration and certificate purchase records.

  2. Pack cost on actual cells

The main packs are costed from the cells actually used, by supplier and grade, and compared with the average cell price in the current cost sheet.

  3. EPR accrued as sales occur

Batteries placed on the market are recorded by type and weight with the obligation accrued as sales occur, and rejected cells are logged for supplier claims.

  4. A pack margin and exposure report

The first report shows contribution by pack and customer segment, the open foreign-currency position on cells, and EPR accrued against met.

How it is measured

The reports the work is judged on

Each is recorded as a baseline before the work starts, so later reports have an honest comparison.

  • Cell cost per kilowatt-hour, by supplier and grade
  • Open foreign-currency position on cells
  • Warranty claims against provision, by product
  • EPR obligation accrued against met
  • Incoming cell rejection and supplier recovery
  • Contribution by product and customer segment

Who it suits

Written for, and not the right fit for

Not the right fit if
  • You need battery safety or performance certification — that sits with accredited test agencies and the approving authority.
  • You need EPR registration, returns or certificates filed with the regulator — that filing is your own responsibility, and we prepare the data for it.
Written for
  • Lithium-ion pack assemblers and cell manufacturers supplying vehicles or energy storage.
  • Lead-acid battery makers serving automotive, inverter and industrial markets.
  • Funded battery companies preparing for diligence or capacity expansion.

Common questions

Questions owners in this trade ask

How should battery makers account for EPR obligations?

Generally as a cost of the sales that create the obligation, accrued as you sell rather than when you buy certificates. We set out the basis and agree the accounting with your statutory auditor.

How do we set a warranty provision for a new battery chemistry?

Start from test data, supplier warranties and early field data, and revisit it each quarter. It's better to begin with a reasoned estimate and refine it than to wait for claims to arrive.

Who certifies a cell-manufacturing incentive claim?

We prepare and maintain the cost, production and value-addition data a claim relies on. The claim is your own filing, and any required certification is signed by an independently engaged professional.

Scope and professional coordination

5th Quadrant performs costing, accounting and reporting and prepares claim and EPR data. Registration, returns and certificates under the battery waste management rules, battery safety and performance certification, and any government incentive claim are the client's own responsibility with the relevant authority; certificates required by those schemes and statutory audit are signed by an independently engaged licensed professional. Full detail is on our Professional Scope page.
